FLORAL CITY -- Having recently returned from leading an expedition in South America, Tom Ritchie of Floral City will present a free program, sponsored by the Floral City Heritage Council, De Soto . . . His Exploits Before Florida at 7 p.m. April 24 in the Floral City Community Building, 8370 E Orange Ave. A limited display of artifacts from Ritchie's many expeditions in South America will be available for viewing after the program. Ritchie, author, artist and historian, has long been fascinated by the Spanish conquistadors and their exploits. He has traveled extensively throughout the New World in their historic footprints. As a professional naturalist and lecturer who has worked with expedition cruises for more than 25 years, Ritchie currently develops expeditions for Lars Lindbad of New York City.
As an accomplished wildlife artist, Ritchie often takes advantage of his travels and paints interesting local subjects of natural history. His work is shown in galleries in Florida and North Carolina and he frequently enjoys illustrating books and magazines. Ritchie has been a long time exponent of Citrus County history, and in 1996 he authored a book about Floral City History and in 2000 about the Old 1912 County Courthouse. A year ago, he wrote the text and provided the art work for a new interpretive history exhibit on the Withlacoochee State Trail at the Jenrette Gazebo Site in downtown Floral City.
