COLUMBIA, S.C. -- After 12 years at Wake Forest, Dave Odom was restless. He said Tuesday he found a new challenge at South Carolina after a whirlwind courtship that made him the coach after two others turned the school down.

In front of more than 200 cheering fans, Odom took the job after what he said were just hours of negotiations with athletic director Mike McGee.

Odom, 58, signed a five-year deal worth about $750,000 a year, which compares to what he made with the Deacons. Incentive clauses could increase Odom's pay to nearly $1-million.

South Carolina settled on Odom after a four-week search to replace Eddie Fogler, whose contract was not extneded for a fourth season. Kentucky's Tubby Smith and Connecticut's Jim Calhoun turned down the job.
