LACOOCHEE -- A Tampa man found dead after wandering away from a campsite in the Withlacoochee State Park last year committed suicide, the Pasco-Pinellas Medical Examiner's Office has ruled.

David Paul Thomas, 25, was last seen the night of Nov. 13, the Pasco County Sheriff's Office reported. He was on a weekend canoeing trip with 23 friends and walked away from the Dobes Hole campsite after exchanging words with other members of the group, according to reports.

A search party found Thomas' body two days later in a field south of Mickler Road, between Lacoochee and Dade City.

Dr. Laura Hair, an assistant medical examiner, ruled last week that Thomas bled to death from self-inflicted wounds on his wrists.

The Sheriff's Office initially said there were no obvious signs of trauma.
