County okays rezoning for Key Training Center

INVERNESS -- The County Commission approved a rezoning request Tuesday evening that allows the Key Training Center to build a larger thrift store at State Road 44 and Commerce Terrace, just east of the current thrift store in Lecanto. Changing the 2-acre site from professional offices to general commercial zoning allows for a store larger than 3,000 square feet, although Key Center officials have said they have no immediate plans to develop the vacant site.

Open house for incoming students at Citrus High

INVERNESS -- Parents and eighth-grade students who will be attending Citrus High School are invited to an open house at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the cafeteria to meet guidance counselors and learn about curricula and course selections for ninth grade.

Alzheimer's Family Organization to rally May 12

LECANTO -- The Alzheimer's Family Organization will have its first Citrus County Rally to Remember from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 12 at the Nature Coast Lodge, 279 N Lecanto Highway (County Road 491 N). Parking and admission to the event are free and will benefit the Alzheimer's Family Organization, which helps Citrus County families care for family members with Alzheimer's disease.

There will be many events at the rally including a decorated rocking chair rock-a-thon, raffles, arts and crafts show, food and entertainment throughout the day. The Alzheimer's Family Organization staff will answer questions about services they offer.

Admission and parking are free to this rain or shine event. You might find some great crafts for that last minute Mother's Day gift and you might help out fellow Citrus County residents, just by cheering on the rockers. There will be lots going on all day, so bring the family. If you have any questions about the event or would like to have a booth or enter a rocking chair, call 795-2422.

About 350 attend TRICARE programs meeting

BEVERLY HILLS -- About 350 people jammed into the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10087 on Monday to hear more about the new TRICARE for Life and TRICARE pharmacy benefit programs. The TRICARE program allows retirees age 65 and older, as well as eligible relatives, to have prescription drug coverage through the mail and through network and non-network pharmacies.

The program started April 1. On Oct. 1, those retirees also will be eligible for TRICARE for Life, which provides TRICARE as a secondary payer to Medicare.

Italian Social Club cancels dance on Good Friday

INVERNESS -- In observance of Good Friday, the Italian Social Club of Citrus County has canceled its Friday night dance.

The Nice N Easy Combo will provide listening and dancing music again April 20 and continue for the entire year. The club will have the Saturday dinner and dance with doors open at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 and dancing to the Nice N Easy Combo from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday at the clubhouse, 1305 E Norvell Bryant Highway, Hernando. The menu will be salad, stuffed pork chop or half of a baked chicken, two side dishes, plus dessert. For information, call 344-3447.

TOO FAR member to speak to master gardeners

INVERNESS -- The Citrus County Master Gardener Association will meet at 10 a.m. April 19 in the Citrus Auditorium, adjacent to the Citrus Extension Office at 3600 S Florida Ave. (U.S. 41). The program will be on "Water and Its Value to You" by Larry Hartman of Floral City.

Hartman is a founding member and current board member of TOO FAR, a local organization that monitors water conditions and issues. Hartman has extensive knowledge of the Tsala Apopka Lake Chain, the Withlacoochee River, the drought and government regulations regarding our water supply.

The business meeting will follow the program. All active and inactive master gardeners are encouraged to attend. For information, call president Linda Moran, 344-4496.
