NEW PORT RICHEY -- A man and a woman were charged with dealing drugs and contributing to the delinquency of children Thursday after officials allegedly found crack cocaine, marijuana and three sleeping children in their home.

Shavonda Kanise Anderson, 23, and Steven Antonio Thompson, 29, were arrested by Pasco County sheriff's deputies at their home at 7662 Mitchell Ranch Road.

Deputies confiscated 32.2 grams (or 1.13 ounces) of crack cocaine and 26.1 grams (0.92 ounces) of marijuana from the home. The marijuana had been placed on an infant seat accessible to the children, deputies said.

The children, ranging in age from a newborn to a 10-year-old, were taken by the state Division of Children and Families and placed in the custody of relatives, said deputies.

Former inmate files suit over medical care in jail

TAMPA -- A former inmate at the county jail in Land O'Lakes is suing Pasco Sheriff Lee Cannon, alleging he got improper medical treatment during his incarceration.

Duane Bethea, a Hillsborough County resident and a quadriplegic, was being held at the Pasco jail in April 1998, and poor medical care there contributed to a hip ulcer and a urinary tract infection, according to the lawsuit filed Friday at U.S. District Court in Tampa.

Bethea is seeking more that $75,000 in damages.
