Players needed for softball league

The Buddies Senior Softball League needs players.

Games will be played from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and Thursdays at Anderson Snow Softball Complex on Anderson Snow Road, Brooksville.

Some postal branches to extend tax-day hours

The U.S. Postal Service announces extended hours for income tax season. Because April 15 is Sunday, the following branches will have extended hours Monday:

Main office, 19101 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville, will have extended counter service until 6 p.m. In addition, already-stamped mail may be dropped off until midnight in the collection boxes and will receive an April 16 postmark.

Spring Hill Branch, 8501 Philatelic Drive, off Forest Oaks Boulevard, will have extended counter service until 6 p.m. In addition, already-stamped mail may be dropped off until midnight in the collection boxes and will receive an April 16 postmark.

Aviation Branch, 16150 Aviation Loop Drive, Brooksville, will be open regular business hours, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mail can be dropped off in the collection chute inside the branch until 5 p.m. Mail dropped off after that will not receive an April 16 postmark.

Downtown Branch, 207 E Fort Dade St., Brooksville, will be open regular business hours, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The last collection box will be picked up at 5:05 p.m. Mail dropped off after that time will not receive an April 16 postmark.

Camp helps children who have lost a loved one

LifePath Hospice will hold its annual Bereavement Camp for kids, Camp Circle of Love, May 4-6 at the Lakewood Retreat Center in Brooksville.

The camp is open to children ages 6 to 16 who have experienced the loss of a loved one, regardless of whether that loved one was under LifePath Hospice care.

Children will participate in recreational and therapeutic activities, including swimming, hayrides, campfires, canoeing and hiking, as well as counseling and a memorial service.

Camp staff includes a physician, LifePath Hospice licensed counselors, social workers and community volunteers.

A sliding scale registration fee of $1-$25 per child is required. The registration fee includes all meals, activities, materials, round-trip transportation to Brooksville and two nights of lodging.

Women's group to hold luncheon, fashion show

The Tangerine Charter Chapter of the American Business Women's Association is hosting "Spring: A Time for Renewal," a luncheon and fashion show, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 28 at the Silverthorn Country Club, 4470 Golf Club Lane, Brooksville.

The event is a professional development opportunity for women and men in the community.

Four guest speakers -- Dr. Carmine Bell, Robert Ralston, Janet Paskins and Dr. Sharon Vickers -- will share ideas.

Tickets are $25, and proceeds benefit the association's scholarship fund for Hernando County residents.

Variety of events part of songbird festival

The "Welcome Back Songbirds" festival will be held Saturday.

The event is part of Earth Day Celebration 2001, sponsored by the Chinsegut Nature Center, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Hernando Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society and Hernando Audubon Society.

The program includes: 7:30 a.m., bird banding by Shane Belson; 9 a.m., bird life in your landscape with Mike Liberton, birding with Audubon and banding; 10 a.m., bird habitat walk, butterfly walk and neotropical bird games with Chinsegut volunteers; 11 a.m., birds of prey by Judi Carter and building bird boxes with Audubon; noon, bird calling contest; 12:30 p.m., puppetry; 1 p.m., bird life in your landscape with Mike Liberton and bugs by Dr. Mark Deyrup; and 2 p.m., bird habitat walk and butterfly walk.

Nature center offers spring bird walk

The Chinsegut Nature Center will hold its "Spring Bird Walk" at 9 a.m. Tuesdayat Big Pine Tract, Old Crystal River Road off U.S. 41.

Participants can meet at Big Pine Tract and should bring binoculars and a bird book. Participants may look for spring bird migrants and residents. The walk is about a mile.
