The outcome of last Saturday's Beach to Bayou Run in Tarpon Springs was never in doubt.

The outcome of last Saturday's Beach to Bayou Run in Tarpon Springs was never in doubt.

Tony Teats and Judy Maguire asserted themselves early and ran to convincing wins in the field of 820.

For Teats, winner of December's Hops Marathon and owner of a 14:49 5K, it was a virtual stroll in the park as he cruised unchallenged, winning in 15:32.

"Right now, I'm using 5Ks and 10Ks as a steppingstone to longer distance races, such as the half-marathon and marathon events," said Teats, 24. "I'm just trying to get better. Toward that end, I'm going to start training with (runner-up) Keith Batten. He's run 5Ks in the 14-minute range."

Teats ran the first mile in 4:48, slowed to 5:00 for the second mile and ran the third mile in 5:08.

"I glanced over my shoulder at the turns and didn't see anyone close, so I eased up a little," Teats said. "I liked the course a lot because it wasn't the usual out-and-back."

The next race on Teats' calendar is the May 5 Indianapolis Mini Marathon, a 13.1-miler. A native of Hartford City, Ind., he ran the race in 1998 in 1:08:13 for 13th place among 20,000 runners. Batten (16:25) held off Tom Adamich (16:46) for second place, followed by Brian Sullivan (17:10), Denny Weston (17:17) and Dan Ecker (17:32).

The women's race was even more of a rout with Maguire finishing seventh overall in 17:41, more than two minutes ahead of runner-up Kit Van Allan (19:52) of Palm Harbor.

Angie Young (20:17) took third, a tick ahead of Lisa Kothe, 40, of Clearwater.

CHERRY BLOSSOM: The 29th annual 10-miler in the nation's capital included four cup winners from February's Gasparilla 15K.

Two cup winners, Laure Blume of Pinellas Park and Matt Whaley of the USF Bulls, had other plans. Blume was saving it for Monday's Boston Marathon, and Whaley had a track meet.

Mary Delie of Palm Harbor, winner of the Gasparilla masters cup, finished in 1:09:29, just behind Eileen Peters of Plant City in 1:08:47. Delie's husband, Jeff, earned an award for finishing fourth in the 40-44 in 56:31, good for 60th in the field of 6,579.

He was just ahead of Gary Peters, Eileen's husband, who finished in 57:11.

Mike Greiwe of Tampa, third at Gasparilla, finished 41st in 54:27. Bea-Marie Altieri of Clermont just missed out on top-12 money, taking 16th in 59:43. She was the third woman at Gasparilla.

Two-time Gasparilla winner Elana Meyer took the women's division in 52:16. And John Korir led a contingent of Kenyans across the finish line in 46:12.

ALL ROADS LEAD TO ROME: A contingent of West Florida Y Runners Club members ventured to Italy on March 25 to run the Rome Marathon.

For most, it was more of an adventure than a race but still 26.2 miles of running.

Skip Rogers, veteran director of the Times Turkey Trot, took pictures along the cobblestone course. Marti Galloway of the Times secured more than $5,000 in pledges, running it for the American Diabetes Foundation.

Pinellas/Pasco Judge Dee Anna Farnell ran it in 3:42:33, fastest among the delegation and good for 85th among 864 women and 6,003 overall runners. Other participants included Dick and Julie Buckley, Joyce Rogers and Crockett Farnell.

BOSTON BOUND: Dee Anna Farnell has had to drop out of the Forerunners women's team for Monday's Boston Marathon, but three members remain to try to carry on the winning tradition. (The team won in 1996, 1999 and 2000).

Laure Blume, with a best time of 2:59, heads the team, rounded out by Mary Ann Protz and Erin Lynch.

The Forerunners men's team will be paced by Harvey's Festival 5K winner Steve Wilcox and rounded out by Daryl Blume, Walt Sieg and the father/son team of Joe and Jim Burgasser.

Coach Joe finished second in 60-69 last year in 3:03 and improved on that with a 2:54 at Chicago last fall. At the 1981 Boston Marathon, at age 42, he ran it in 2:31. His best marathon time of 2:27:08 was run a year earlier in New Orleans.
