Mya talks about Teen Esteem
Mya knows many girls are unsure of themselves. That's why the 21-year-old singer works with Teen Esteem, a group that tries to boost the self-esteem of young women.
"All females especially -- even males today, for that matter -- deal with insecurity about body image and the way one looks," she told AP Radio last week. "Unfortunately, our society focuses a lot on what we look like instead of our skill."
Mya, whose Case of the Ex (Watcha Gonna Do) was a recent top-five Billboard hit, said many girls she works with have negative thoughts about their bodies.
"Some of these feelings can lead to sicknesses, overeating, undereating, anorexia, bulimia and a number of things that affect the future and health of a young girl," she said.
It's kids' turn to give awards
Tune to Nickelodeon this Saturday for the cable network's annual Kids' Choice Awards. The show airs live from 8 to 9:30 p.m. and is hosted by Rosie O'Donnell. Among the nominees this year are Jim Carrey for The Grinch, Sisqo for favorite male singer, Brandy for favorite television actress and Christina Aguilera for favorite female singer. Performers include the Backstreet Boys, Destiny's Child, Lil' Bow Wow and Aaron Carter.
Twins turn a new page
The premiere issue of the Mary-Kate and Ashley Magazine is on newsstands now. Here are a few things we thought you might want to know about it:
It's expensive! The magazine costs $5.99 an issue and $27.95 for a year's subscription, which is six issues. Most magazines cost between $2 and $3.
If you don't care for Mary-Kate and Ashley, this may not be the magazine for you because photos of the girls are everywhere, from the numerous advertisements for their products (dolls, videos, books, clothes, etc.) to posed shots with celebrities.
The first issue offers stories about a female football player, the possibility of a female president, being more tech savvy than your parents and what it's like to get braces. There are plenty of fashion and celebrity pieces to balance things out.
