Judge does not recuse himself in Schiavo case

ST. PETERSBURG -- Pinellas-Pasco Judge George Greer refused on Monday to disqualify himself from Terri Schiavo's right-to-die case despite her father's accusation that he is biased.

Greer presided over the family's emotional trial last year and ruled that Michael Schiavo can remove his wife's feeding tube despite her parents' objections.

Schiavo has permission to remove the feeding tube at 1 p.m. Friday. But Mrs. Schiavo's parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, asked the Florida Supreme Court to postpone that date.

Bob Schindler had requested that the judge disqualify himself from hearing future motions in the case because Schindler feared Greer would not give a fair hearing.

Mrs. Schiavo, now 37, collapsed at her St. Petersburg home on Feb. 25, 1990. Her heart stopped beating, and she was deprived of oxygen for five minutes.

Doctors say she is unaware of what is happening around her. But her parents dispute that and say she responds to sounds and sights.

The Schindlers and Schiavo have accused each other of trying to control Mrs. Schiavo's fate to get $700,000 she received in 1993 from a malpractice suit.
