Citrus HometownBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published April 18, 2001 Samaritans clean upThe Sassy Sams Camping Club, Nature Coast Chapter 163, of the Good Sams Club, had their quarterly road side pickup along State Road 44 W, Crystal River, on Feb. 24. Sharing a breakSHARE Tampa Bay volunteers from the Crystal River United Methodist Church site take a coffee break at a recent food distribution. Participants in the SHARE program pay a fixed rate for a basic package of food, which usually includes meat, vegetables and other food items. They also perform two hours of volunteer service monthly, which may be at the SHARE site or any type of unpaid assistance to neighbors, organizations, etc. There are six distribution sites in Citrus County. For more information, call Marg at 795-4193 or Betty at 563-2227. * * * The Women of Sugarmill Woods recently held a "Girl Talk" fundraising luncheon. The guest speaker was Nancy Kennedy who spoke on "Men are from Sears. Women are from Venus." Angela Vick provided vocal entertainment and harpist Sue Jeffers provided background music. This active group of ladies is only 15 years old, but have donated almost $200,000 in scholarships to local charities. The group provides annual scholarships to graduating seniors at Lecanto High School and renews many scholarships for previous recipients. In 2000, approximately $21,000 was given in scholarships. Another $5,500 went to local charities such as the Boys and Girls Club of Homosassa and Homosassa Elementary School. They have held a variety of fundraising events over the years including golf tournaments, bake sales, trash-and-treasure sales, published a cookbook and luncheons. The club's Creative Sewing group also puts on a fashion show and luncheon each year. Women living in Sugarmill Woods who are interested in joining the group should call Pat Schuessler at 382-0057. * * * The Citrus County Sheriff's Office is looking for volunteers to staff the Coastal Region substation Monday through Saturday. The office is at 8016 W Gulf-to-Lake Highway in Crystal River. Volunteers answer telephones and help citizens who bring their questions and concerns into the office. Training is provided and scheduling is flexible. If you have a few hours to spare each week, call John Tomasheski at 726-4488, ext. 320. * * * Hospice of Citrus County will hold its annual memorial service to honor patients who died from March 2000 through February 2001. The service will take place at 2 p.m. April 28 at the Beverly Hills Community Church, 82 Civic Circle, Beverly Hills. Families are encouraged to bring a photograph of the loved one to the hospice office by Friday so a pictorial display can be exhibited at the service. For information, call Hospice at 527-2020. Take a lookThe Beverly Hills Recreation Association will feature the music of Eddie Shannon & Co. for its monthly dance at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The clubhouse is at 77 Civic Circle. Barbara Parker, member of the Herb Research Foundation and certified in Chinese and Western herbology will discuss how to treat stress, depression, fatigue, insomnia and more with herbal fragrances. She also will discuss essential oils and how to use them.
