BROOKSVILLE -- Driver education courses will keep on rolling.

The School Board, which a month ago appeared ready to end daytime driver education, voted 3-2 Tuesday night to keep the program in place.

Board members John Druzbick, Robert Wiggins and Gail Coleman voted to keep the program as part of the regular school day. Board Chairman Jim Malcolm and member Sandra Nicholson voted against it.

Driver education, which is taught at all county high schools, is one of the most popular electives. It offers students classroom instruction on drugs, alcohol and traffic education as well as up to six hours of driving practice.

The program came into question when district officials suggested that students might benefit from more challenging electives.

Malcolm and Nicholson wanted driver education to be taught only after school, on Saturdays or in the summer. They wanted students to pay for the course. And they didn't want it to count as credits toward the high school graduation requirements.
