FAMILY: Wife, Johncyna Williams; sons, Brian and Cullen; daughter, Leah.

PLAYING CAREER: One of the all-time best designated hitters, he played from 1968-87 with the Reds and Royals, hitting .290 with 191 homers and 1,097 RBI. ... Finished fourth in the AL MVP voting in 1976 and 1985. ... Played in four World Series, 1970 and '72 with Reds and '80 and '85 with Royals, hitting .400 in 17 World Series games. ... One of 16 members of Royals Hall of Fame.

COACHING CAREER: Was player/hitting coach for Royals in 1987 and coached Pirates minor-leaguers in 1988-89. ... Became Expos hitting coach in 1990 before being named Royals manager for the next season. ... Was Reds hitting coach in 1995-96 and Phillies hitting coach from 1997-2000. The Phillies improved their batting average in each of his first three seasons. ... Joined Rays as bench coach in November.

MANAGING CAREER: Led Royals from 1991-94, compiling a 286-277 record with winning records three of the four seasons. ... Finished no better than third in the Central Division.
