Art, reception remember Holocaust
For Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day, the Florida Holocaust Museum in St. Petersburg is holding a special reception and opening for "Women of Ravensbruck -- Portraits of Courage" by Julia Terwilliger. Terwilliger, a local artist and teacher, dedicated her art to telling the story of the Ravensbruck concentration camp for women. She died unexpectedly in 1998, and the following year her husband, Bert Alan Terwilliger, presented the works to the Florida Holocaust Museum. The exhibit currently features Portraits of Courage, a moving series of large panels made from photo transfers of victims of Ravensbruck and mixed media. Artifacts from Ravensbruck, as well as Terwilliger's reconstruction of several artifacts, are also on display. Among the most moving aspects of the exhibit are the 14 photographs and biographies of heroines from the camp. Opening reception for the exhibit is Sunday, 1:30-3 p.m. Includes a presentation by guest curator Rochelle Saidel. In honor of Yom HaShoah the Florida Holocaust Museum has waived regular admission fees that day. The show continues through Sept. 9, from 10 a.m to 5 p.m. weekdays, noon to 5 p.m. weekends. Call (727) 820-0100 for more information.
Start the weekend early with Tampa Gallery Association's third Thursday gallery open house 5-8 tonight, at locations throughout the city. It's a good time to catch the show of Victorian narrative paintings, including Weary Life by Robert Carrick, shown here, before it leaves the Tampa Museum of Art Sunday.
The free event includes admission to all galleries and the museum. The museum charges $2 for those who want to attend "Art After Dark," a reception and short program on the terrace, taking place during the hop. For information, call Nuance Galleries, 720 S Dale Mabry (813) 875-0511.
