Best betsBy EILEEN SCHULTE © St. Petersburg Times, published April 20, 2001 Heart of Largo FestivalThe fourth annual Heart of Largo Music & Food Festival this weekend will feature a plethora of cultural entertainment from Broadway tunes to African-American spiritual music. At 7 p.m. tonight, singer Lotaar Bergeest, who has a repertoire of more than 48 opera, oratorio and theatre roles, will perform "Bits of Broadway" at the Largo Cultural Center, 105 Central Park Drive, Largo. Tickets are $12.50. For children, there will be a ballet called Peter and the Wolf at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday at the Largo Cultural Center ($6.50 for adults, $4 for students), and "Clowning for Kids" featuring more than 30 interactive games, crafts and more ($5 for wrist bands). At 8 p.m. Saturday, recording artist Phil Vassar, 1999 ASCAP Songwriter of the Year, will perform hits Just Another Day in Paradise, Carlene and Rose Bouquet at Largo Central Park, 101 Central Park Drive, Largo. Rockabilly band Cigar Store Indians will open (6:30 p.m.). Rhythm and blues performer Sandy Atkinson, and classic song band Pocket Change will play at 1 p.m. Free or $10 stage-front seating is available. At 4 p.m. Sunday, enjoy African-American spiritual music by the Spiritual Renaissance Singers of Tampa at the Largo Cultural Center. Admission is $12. Celebrate Earth DayNature walks, kids' activities, a butterfly release and the planting of a Champion tree will be part of the Earth Day celebration this weekend at the Florida Botanical Gardens. On Saturday , the Pinellas County Master Gardeners will have a plant sale from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition to having a variety of plants for sale, the gardeners will answer questions about planting and any problems. A portion of the plant sale proceeds will go to the Botanical Gardens. Other activities that day are as follows: From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., there will be family activities, tours and environmental displays. Also, birdhouses and bird feeders from kits costing $5 to $7 can be built on the premises. 10 a.m. to noon -- The Pinellas County 4-H will conduct demonstrations in the Tropical Pavilion on the grounds. A butterfly release is at noon on the main plaza. 6-11 p.m. -- The Friends of the Florida Botanical Gardens will give its first fund-raising event, a jazz concert featuring the On Que Players. Pastino's will sell food and there will be a cash bar. Admittance is free to members of the Friends' group; others can purchase tickets for $5 in advance or $7 at the door. WSJT-FM 94.1 radio station is co-sponsoring the event. In addition to the 8 a.m. continental breakfast and nature walk on Sunday, an official Earth Day celebration will be from 2 to 4 p.m. It will include an Indian blessing ceremony, a Champion tree planting, speeches and music from a local children's group. The Botanical Gardens are part of the 182-acre area known as Pinewood Cultural Park. Other components are the Extension Service, Heritage Village and the Gulf Coast Museum of Art.
