Yankees looking to get Williams back soon

Bernie Williams will rejoin the Yankees today or Saturday after missing 10 games to be with his ailing father in Puerto Rico.

"His dad is doing better," Yankee manager Joe Torre said before his team played Toronto Thursday. "We'd like to believe Bernie will be here (today). My feeling is he'll play Saturday."

Bernabe Williams Sr. has pulmonary fibrosis, a lung condition. Torre said Williams' father has been moved from intensive care.

"I don't even know if Bernie's going to be there on time for Friday's game or not, but if I'm comfortable that he's ready to play, then he'll play. But we'll see when he gets there, and how he's doing," Torre said.

Also, Torre said Orlando Hernandez will miss his next scheduled start because of an elbow injury.

And third-base prospect Drew Henson is expected to miss 4-6 weeks with a broken left hand.

MALONE RESIGNS: Kevin Malone resigned as general manager of the Dodgers, ending a 2 1/2-year tenure.

Malone quit five days after threatening a Padres fan who heckled Dodgers outfielder Gary Sheffield in San Diego.

"I absolutely refuse to allow myself to become a distraction," Malone said at a news conference, reading from a letter addressed to Dodgers chairman Bob Daly.

"He really believed he was a distraction, and we agreed with that," Daly later told reporters.

"He does have a tendency to put his foot in his mouth," Daly said. "I'm disappointed that these things kept happening."

Smiling briefly before he began reading, Malone finished the letter, refused to take questions and drove away from Dodger Stadium.

"I regret only that those who have judged me harshly didn't get to know me better," Malone said. "I regret I couldn't convince them how much I care. I hope my actions today will give them some indication."

Assistant general manager Dave Wallace will oversee baseball operations while the team searches for a permanent GM.

Also, the Dodgers placed right-hander Andy Ashby on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Monday, with a strained muscle in his pitching elbow.

EXPOS: Outfielder Vladimir Guerrero was out of the starting lineup with a bruised right hand.

Guerrero left Wednesday's game against the Mets in the ninth inning after being hit on his right hand by a pitch from Donne Wall.

X-rays showed the hand wasn't broken, and manager Felipe Alou said Guerrero should be back in a few days.

PIRATES: Pitcher Jason Schmidt left with shoulder discomfort after throwing one scoreless inning in a rehabilitation start for the Double-A Altoona Curve.

RANGERS: Tim Crabtree, who has converted all four save chances in his new role as Texas' closer, was put on the 15-day disabled list with lower back problems. The move is retroactive to Sunday.

"This is just a little bump in the road. We'll get this taken care of," Crabtree said, adding he felt better after an injection earlier in the day to alleviate inflammation in his back.

The Rangers purchased the contract of right-hander R.A. Dickey from Oklahoma of the PCL. It is the first call-up for Dickey, the team's No. 1 pick in 1996.

CANSECO BROTHERS REUNITE: The Canseco brothers are coming to Newark.

The Newark Bears, an independent minor-league team struggling to fill the seats in its $30-million downtown ballpark, signed ex-Ray Jose Canseco and his brother, Ozzie, who hit 48 home runs for the Bears last season.

"I am 100 percent healthy, and in evaluating the scenario, I felt it was in my best interest to sign with the Atlantic League where I could showcase my abilities for every major-league team," Jose Canseco said. "That, plus having the opportunity to play with my twin brother Ozzie was the deciding factor."
