Hingis, Mauresmo in tennis shootout

Top seed Martina Hingis and No. 7 Amelie Mauresmo stretched winning runs Thursday -- Hingis with her 12th straight match victory at the Family Circle, and Mauresmo with her 16th consecutive win overall. Their match in today's quarterfinals at Charleston, S.C., will be their first encounter this year. Hingis, who won this title the last two times she entered, in 1997 and 1999, overcame Iva Majoli 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Mauresmo, who has won consecutive tournaments at Paris, Nice and Amelia Island, beat No. 11 Lisa Raymond 7-5, 7-5. Others advancing to the round of eight were No. 2 Jennifer Capriati, No. 3 Conchita Martinez, No. 4 Amanda Coetzer and unseeded Marlene Weingartner.

MORE TENNIS: Britain's Tim Henman rallied to beat Spanish clay-court specialist Albert Costa 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 and advance to the quarterfinals of the $2.95-million Masters Series Monte Carlo. Also winning were second-seeded Gustavo Kuerten and Hicham Arazi. ... Serena Williams pulled out of next month's German Open and won't play tournament tennis until the French Open later in May, German organizers said. Williams is suffering from a "long-term injury," the organizers said without giving details. She incurred a thigh injury last month, but played an exhibition against sister Venus. ... Rajeev Ram of Carmel, Ind., upset top-seeded Ytai Abougzir of Miami 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 to move into the boys 18 final at the Easter Bowl junior championships in Palm Springs, Calif. He faced ninth-seeded Hamid Mirzadeh of Lake Worth, a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Brian Wright of Fresno, Calif., in Thursday's late final. ... Top-seeded Magdalena Maleeva reached the quarterfinals of the $110,000 Budapest Open by defeating Adriana Gersi 6-1, 6-1.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Florida State's Rodney Tucker, who had to sit out the season after his arrest on a felony charge of sexual battery on a physically helpless person, might see another season essentially lost even if found innocent. A Dec. 10 trial date was set Thursday. "We're going to ask to move that up substantially," said Clyde Taylor Jr., the Tallahassee attorney representing the sophomore forward. ... Stan Heath, who helped Michigan State win a national title and reach the Final Four the last three years as an assistant, was hired as coach at Kent State. Heath, 36, signed a five-year contract. ... New Louisville coach Rick Pitino announced the hiring of five assistants: Mick Cronin, 29, the top assistant to Cincinnati coach Bob Huggins; Vince Taylor, 40, a Louisville assistant the past three years; Kevin Willard, 26, an associate coach under Pitino with the NBA Celtics; Scott Davenport, 46, who worked for former Louisville coach Denny Crum for the past five years, and Jeff Noyes, a basketball operations assistant with the Celtics. ... Men's national champion Duke will be honored by President Bush at the White House Monday.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Northern Arizona was put on three years' probation by the NCAA on Wednesday for using an ineligible player. The university was censured for a lack of institutional control because professors changed the player's grades. The Division I Infractions Committee took away some scholarships and vacated the results of six 1999 games in which wide receiver Francis St. Paul played while ineligible, dropping the Lumberjacks' record from 8-4 to 4-8. ... Fifteen players and three coaches were added to the Hall of Fame, including defensive back Terry Kinard, tight end Keith Jackson and coach Barry Switzer, who won championships in both college and the NFL. Jackson and Switzer won their college crowns at Oklahoma in 1985; Kinard at Clemson in 1981. Other inductees: halfback Jon Arnett, USC; placekicker Kevin Butler, Georgia; wide receiver Anthony Carter, Michigan; end Dick Duden, Navy; defensive tackle Tim Green, Syracuse; quarterback Ralph Guglielmi, Notre Dame; tackle John Hicks, Ohio State; linebacker D.D. Lewis, Mississippi State; running back Don McCauley, North Carolina; tackle John Outland, Kansas and Penn; lineman Glenn Ressler, Penn State; defensive back Brad Van Pelt, Michigan State; quarterback Steve Young, Brigham Young; coach Grant Teaff of McMurry, Angelo State and Baylor, and coach Bill Yeoman of Houston. ... Six Memphis players will miss the opening game Sept. 3 at Mississippi State because of academic irregularities. Two of them, defensive starters Andre Arnold and Derrick Ballard, also will miss the second game Sept. 8 against Cincinnati, coach Tommy West said. ... Roy "Cowboy" Petsch, who quarterbacked the Cornhuskers in Nebraska's only Rose Bowl appearance, died April 11 in Phoenix at age 82. He played on the 8-2 team in 1940 that lost to Stanford 21-13 in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, 1941. He retired two years ago from a law practice.

COLLEGES: The Florida women's gymnastics team placed fourth in the opening session of the qualifying round at the NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga., and missed today's finals. The Gators' total of 195.825 trailed UCLA (197.625), Michigan (196.525) and Alabama (196.375), which advanced. Junior Hilary Thompson will represent UF in Saturday's individual event finals in floor exercise.

SOCCER: The Mutiny added a second international friendly match for this season, facing English First Division champion Fulham F.C. at 7 p.m. May 16 at the University of Tampa's Pepin/Rood Stadium. Chad Marshall scored the winning goal in the 76th minute, leading the United States past Jamaica 2-1 late Wednesday in an opening-round match of the CONCACAF Under-17 World Championship Qualifying Tournament at St. Louis. ... Liverpool plays in a European Cup final for the first time since 1985, and Spain's Alaves heads to its first final after winning UEFA Cup semifinals. Liverpool beat Barcelona 1-0 and Alaves beat Germany's Kaiserslautern 4-1.

SWIMMING: The fourth annual Tampa Bay Marathon is scheduled for Saturday in celebration of Earth Day. The 24-mile event starts at 8:30 a.m. from Ben T. Davis Beach on the Courtney Campbell Causeway in Tampa and ends at the Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort on the north entrance to the Sunshine Skyway.
