Recreation program to open doors todayBy ANDREW MEACHAM © St. Petersburg Times, published April 21, 2001 ST. PETERSBURG -- Time is running short for parents who want to register their children in Playcamp, the city's summer recreation program. Doors open at 8 a.m. today at the following recreation centers: Roberts, 1246 50th Ave. N; Campbell Park, 601 14th St. S; Childs Park, 4301 13th Ave. S; Frank H. Pierce, 2000 Seventh St. S; Gladden Park, 3901 30th Ave. N; Lake Vista, 1401 62nd Ave. S; Northwest, 5801 22nd Ave. N; Walter Fuller, 7891 26th Ave. N; Wildwood, 2650 10th Ave. S; and Willis S. Johns (for the program based at Rio Vista Elementary School), 6635 Dr. M.L. King (Ninth) St. S. Playcamp is open to children who have completed kindergarten through the eighth grade. The $385 registration fee covers 10 weeks of indoor and outdoor sports and games, arts and crafts, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The program includes daily breakfast and lunch, three field trips and a T-shirt. Registration for Teen Camp, for those who have completed sixth, seventh or eighth grades, opens at the same times and locations and costs $410. Teen Campers go on more field trips and engage in more physical activities than younger children, said city recreation manager Mary Ann Davis. Only St. Petersburg residents are eligible for the camps. Parents need to bring photo identification, plus a utility bill or other proof of residence. All openings are filled for Playcamp programs at Shore Acres and Willis S. Johns (Fossil Park), which scheduled their registrations for Friday. Recreation officials decided to fill the Willis S. Johns program by 7 p.m. Thursday evening among parents who were already waiting in line for a 7 a.m. Friday registration. "They were in there with their sleeping bags, lounge chairs and coolers, waiting for 17 spots," Davis said. "We made a decision to register them early rather than making them sleep in the park." Even so, more than a dozen people were sent home. Arriving 12 hours early, they were too late to get a spot. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
