Volunteers set to give schoolhouse a face liftBy MARY ELMORE © St. Petersburg Times, published April 22, 2001 LUTZ -- The Lutz Community Council is putting on its painting clothes and hoisting its brushes for the third annual Paint the Towne event. This year the volunteer council and dozens of volunteers are painting a 75-year-old historical site, the Old Lutz School. "This is the first year we're painting a building instead of an individual home," saidDeputy Gordon Brown, who organized the event. The project will extend over two weekends. About 40 volunteers are signed up to clean and prepare the building on Saturday, getting mildew off the windows and taking other steps that will enable another set of 40 volunteers to paint on April 28. The volunteers include Gaither High School students, the Lutz Land 'O Lakes Women's Club, North Tampa Civil Air Patrol, Citizens of the Old Lutz School, the Lutz Community Council, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. Organizations and individuals have donated food, money and other items needed for painting. The Old Lutz School, which was a genuine schoolhouse in its day, is today used for meetings, class reunions, drama classes and field trips for children. It is a staging area for the Lutz Trash Bash, a community cleanup held in September. And, every Halloween for the last 20 years, the schoolhouse is transformed into a haunted house filled with monsters, witches and ghosts. Volunteers also are cleaning, pressure-washing and painting a private home on County Line Road.
