SPJC honor society named best in nation

ST. PETERSBURG -- St. Petersburg Junior College's Phi Theta Kappa honor society has been named the nation's outstanding chapter for the fourth time in 15 years.

No other chapter in the country has received the honor more than twice in 85 years, said Lars Hafner, an adviser to the SPJC/Gibbs campus chapter, which is called Eta Nu.

"This is a big honor. The students really put a lot of effort into activities both on campus and in the community. It's just tremendous, the honor and recognition," Hafner said.

Phi Theta Kappa is the two-year college counterpart of Phi Beta Kappa, the four-year college honor society. There are about 1,200 Phi Theta Kappa chapters in the nation.

SPJC's chapter also had four individual winners at the honor society's international convention in Denver, Colo.

Sue Lewis received a George Bierkoe Distinguished Member Award for her embodiment of the society's hallmarks, which emphasize participation in society programs.

Lee Palmer was named a Distinguished Chapter President. Palmer also is one of the finalists for the Apollo Award, which is the highest honor SPJC can bestow on a graduating sophomore. He is on the All-Florida academic team and was an honorable mention for Florida Leader magazine's student of the year.

Nancy Berghammer, the Eta Nu chapter's historian and America's Promise chairwoman, won a Distinguished Chapter Officer award. America's Promise is a volunteer organization whose mission is to develop youth.

Professor Steve Meier, Eta Nu's adviser, was honored again with a Continued Excellence Award for advisers. Meier has won it five times since 1995.
