Xpress, the Coolest Section of the St. Petersburg Times, is the home for features, news and views of interest to young readers. Most of the work in Xpress, which appears on Mondays in Floridian, is produced by the Times' X-Team. The team of journalists ages 9-17 from around the Tampa Bay area is selected every year at the end of the school year to serve during the following school term. The current team of 12 was chosen out of 150 applicants. Watch for X-Team application forms in Xpress during the month of May.

Wedding bells for Buffy

Sarah Michelle Gellar is engaged to fellow actor Freddie Prinze Jr., but a wedding date hasn't been set. According to Entertainment Tonight, Gellar, the star of Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, announced the engagement last week during her 24th birthday party. The couple met on the set of the 1997 slasher flick I Know What You Did Last Summer and have dated for about a year. They are currently filming a live-action movie based on the Scooby Doo cartoon series, with Gellar playing Daphne and Prinze playing Fred.

And it's still called silly?

Silly Putty, that peculiar pinkish substance that bounces like a rubber ball, was recently inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame. It's in good company. Other toys already in the hall of fame include Lincoln Logs, Monopoly and the Hula Hoop. Silly Putty has been around for 50 years. Each egg container holds 13.3 grams of Silly Putty and sells for about $1.

Their lives flash before your eyes

Destiny's Child Live, a two-hour special on MTV, will air Saturday at noon. Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams will take over the MTV studios and submit themselves to a "this is your life" look at how they got to the top of the music charts. The special will feature performances by the group and appearances by surprise guests.

Daughters head to the workplace

On Thursday girls ages 9 to 15 will go to work with a parent or mentor during the ninth annual Take Our Daughters to Work Day. Last year 11-million girls participated in the national event, originated by the Ms. Foundation for Women. According to the foundation, this special day was created to "help girls stay strong and remain confident." Contest seeks holiday card designs

The 10th annual Pier 1/UNICEF season greeting card contest is under way. Entry packets are available at all Pier 1 stores and online at http://www.pier1.com. The contest encourages kids younger than 13 to "color the world a better place" by designing a picture depicting their holiday wishes for children around the world. Two national winners will be chosen and their cards featured as part of the UNICEF card collection sold in Pier 1 stores this fall. All entries must be hand-drawn and received by May 11, 2001.
