Jesuit's Philip Nordhturft III, a varsity letterman in basketball and track, has been named to the Florida High School Activities Association's Academic All-State Team, which features 24 students, including 11 valedictorians and 17 three-sport athletes.
The 24 student-athletes -- 12 boys and 12 girls -- were chosen from more than 200 nominees from the Association's 562 member schools.
To be eligible for selection, a student must be a graduating senior, have a cumulative unweighted grade point average of 3.5 or higher and have earned a varsity letter in at least two different sports during his or her junior and senior years. Each honoree receives a $500 award.
From the pool of 24 recipients, two Scholar-Athletes of the Year, one boy and one girl, will be announced at the seventh annual FHSAA Academic All-State Awards Banquet to be held June 15 in Tampa.
The Scholar-Athletes of the Year, the most prestigious honors conferred on a student-athlete by the Association, will receive an additional $2,500 each in scholarships. Nordhturft plans to attend Dartmouth in Hanover, N.H., and will study classics.
A.J. Hendrix, Tampa Prep's first-year coach, and Tampa Prep infielder Carlo Bruno, have been chosen the FACA Class 2A, District 13 coach and player of the year, respectively. Bruno hit .491 for the Terrapins this season.
