Teacher's tobacco homework pays off
By PAULETTE LASH RITCHIE © St. Petersburg Times, published April 26, 2001 LECANTO -- Karen Pierce went to a seminar in October to learn about a program at Florida State University on how to teach young students why tobacco is bad and how to avoid it. The Lecanto Primary School fifth-grade teacher then created a lesson plan from the program called Science, Tobacco and You: Best Practices. She decided to enter her lesson in the program's contest in the new activity category and, much to her surprise, won the grand prize for the whole state of Florida. The PBS station WEDU-Ch. 3 visited her classroom April 11 to film her doing the lesson with her students. Her lesson plan eventually will be available to other teachers on the Internet and on a CD. Pierce, 35, said her students were sent fact-finding for things of interest to them about the heart and lungs. Then they had to create questions, write in the answers and provide their references. The lesson also included writing a poem or song about blood flow through the heart and lungs. The third-year teacher has been invited to WEDU in Tampa today to see what was filmed and to receive her award. She doesn't know what the award is yet, but said "they told me to keep the back of my Bronco empty, because it'll be full!" © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
