Persall's Top Five

By STEVE PERSALL

Recent releases recommended by Times film critic Steve Persall

1. Memento -- Ordinary murder mystery becomes something special since the story is told backward. Clever technique makes this limited-run film worth seeking out.

2. Amores Perros -- Three savage tales are seamlessly linked in this nasty little thriller from Mexico. An Oscar nominee for best foreign-language film.

3. Bridget Jones's Diary -- One year in the daffy, dismal life of a British "singleton," played with pinched-face charm by Renee Zellweger.

4. Blow -- Johnny Depp scores in this fact-based story of a small-town boy making good in the cocaine trade. Penelope Cruz co-stars.

5. The Tailor of Panama -- Pierce Brosnan plays a shadier spy than Agent 007, using a meek snitch (Geoffrey Rush) to snatch a fortune. Based on John LeCarre's best-selling novel.
