The Zippers come to Skipper's
Squirrel Nut Zippers play vintage "hot jazz" and big band swing music that's more at home at a jamboree than TRL, but that didn't stop the Zips from scoring an MTV hit in 1997 with Hell.
The eclectic band from Chapel Hill, N.C., has a secret weapon, and her name is Katharine Whalen. Whalen's evocative singing calls to mind the late great Billie Holiday. Add some peppy New Orleans-style accompaniment, full of solid trombone, and the vocals of her partner Jimbo Mathus, and you've got something delicious.
Last year's Bedlam Ballroom showed that the Zips could still pack a speakeasy in the 1920s or 1930s, with jumpy numbers such as Don't Fix It. But, more rockin' fare like Baby Wants A Diamond Ring suddenly catapulted the Zips into, oh say, the 1950s, and that freaked out some fans.
Opening act Cabaret Diosa plays party-ready big band Latin dance music.
The Squirrel Nut Zippers perform with Cabaret Diosa at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Skipper's Smokehouse, 910 Skipper Road, Tampa. $15 advance, $20 day of show. (813) 977-6474.
