A state Board of Regents committee that was supposed to interview candidates next week for the University of Florida presidency instead will discuss whether it is time to reopen the search.

The change was prompted by the withdrawal this week of two more finalists for UF's top job. That left only two candidates in the field -- Auburn University president William Muse and Florida Atlantic University president Anthony Catanese.

Several members of the regents committee have said that is not enough finalists to do a credible search.

Monday, the committee will meet via conference call to discuss what to do next.

"In light of recent events, the wise course of action is to briefly pause the process as we assess options," said regent Jim Heekin, the committee's chairman. "We are committed to finding the best possible candidate to lead the state's oldest, largest and most comprehensive university."
