"Celebration Earth Day" is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Crews Lake Park, Shady Hills.

The event is sponsored by the Pasco County Parks and Recreation and Utilities departments and is free and open to the public.

The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 20, 1970, with more than 20-million Americans participating when citizens were becoming aware of the harm being done to their surrounding natural environment. The observance made an important impact at that time.

A few simple rules today can also help make conserve the Earth's resources:

Save energy: When leaving a room, turn off the lights.

Save water: Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth.

Save trees: At school, work and home, use both sides of the paper.

Remember to reduce, reuse and recycle.

For information about recycling at home or at work, call Rachel Cheever, Pasco County Utilities recycling coordinator, at 847-8041.

The Florida Native Plant Society will have native plants for sale during the Earth Day celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Crews Lake Park, 16739 Crews Lake Drive, Shady Hills.

Beth Connor, a field researcher on the anti-sprawl campaign of the Sierra Club, will be the speaker and discuss "A Tale of Two Counties: Urban Sprawl."
