Burkett shuts out D'backs
PHOENIX -- John Burkett pitched a three-hitter in his first complete game in 97 starts Friday night as Atlanta snapped Arizona's four-game winning streak 9-0.
The 36-year-old right-hander hadn't pitched a complete game since July 2, 1997, for Texas against Colorado, and hadn't had a shutout since Aug. 11, 1996, for Texas at Toronto.
Chipper Jones had his first career five-hit game with a home run, double and three singles.
Andruw Jones and B.J. Surhoff hit home runs off Armando Reynoso in Atlanta's five-run second inning.
Quilvio Veras hit his first home run in nearly a year off reliever Erik Sabel in the eight.
Burkett pitched 51/3 hitless innings before pinch-hitter Danny Bautista singled to right in the sixth. Matt Williams doubled with one out in the seventh for Arizona, his 300th career double. David Dellucci singled to lead off the eighth for the third hit.
Burkett struck out five, walked one and hit a batter. He repeatedly got the Diamondbacks, who had scored 41 in their previous four games, to fly out or ground out.
REDS 12, ROCKIES 9: Ruben Rivera and Dmitri Young hit consecutive two-run doubles in a six-run eighth inning as Cincinnati rallied for its eighth straight road win.
Colorado led 9-6 going into the eighth, but Kelly Stinnett hit a run-scoring single off Juan Acevedo, Rivera pinch hit and tied the score against Jose Jimenez, who relieved Mike Myers. Young doubled for an 11-9 lead. After an intentional walk to Sean Casey, Alex Ochoa added a run-scoring single.
MARLINS 9, ASTROS 8 (10): Eric Owens homered in the 10th for his career-high fifth hit, leading visiting Florida to victory.
With one out in the 10th, Owens hit a 2-and-2 pitch from Billy Wagner just over the outstretched glove of rightfielder Moises Alou. Owens scored four runs.
Antonio Alfonseco pitched two innings for the win.
CARDINALS 9, METS 0: Matt Morris shut down New York for seven innings, and Jim Edmonds and Placido Polanco each had three hits.
The league champion Mets have lost four straight and nine of 13, dropping to 8-13 and into last place. St. Louis is 3-1 on its six-game homestand.
Morris allowed five hits in seven innings, struck out three and walked one, lowering his ERA from 4.13 to 3.19.
EXPOS 6, BREWERS 1: Vladimir Guerrero, Orlando Cabrera and Andy Tracy homered to back Mike Thurman, and Montreal stopped Milwaukee's five-game home winning streak.
Thurman allowed one run and four hits in seven innings, striking out six and walking two.
Mark Leiter, making his first start since Sept. 23, 1997, when he was with Philadelphia, allowed two hits -- both by Guererro -- and two runs in five innings. He struck out five and walked none.
