Man, 56, smoking in bed dies in fire

TAMPA -- A 56-year-old man who fell asleep on his bed with a lit cigarette died in a fire early Friday.

Capt. Bill Wade of Tampa Fire Rescue said the man's family has identified him as James Calvin Clendenin. He lived in a small, circular building about the size of a shed in the back of the family's property at 8419 N Newport Ave. The family lives in a house in front.

Fire trucks responded to the call at 5:03 a.m. Friday.
