Local over-65 swimmers set national records

ST. PETERSBURG -- Florence Carr set a national record when she and three other swimmers won age-group high-point awards for the Florida Maverick Masters women's team at the St. Petersburg Masters short-course championships earlier this month.

Carr set the 100 IM medley record for the 75- to 79-year-old age group with a time of 1:41.86. Carr, Patricia Tullman (60-64), Doris Prokopi (65-69) and Peggy Hughes (80-84) were high-point winners.

North Carolinian John Kortheuer, swimming for the St. Petersburg-based Mavericks, set three national records in the 70-74 age group. His records came in the 100-yard individual medley (1:09.64), the 50 breast (34.08) and the 100 breast (1:16.80).

Tullman also won the first Jayne Mann Lambke Memorial Award, to be presented each year at the St. Petersburg Masters championships to the woman who wins the 50-yard freestyle in the 60-64 age group.

The women's team topped all other visiting teams, and the Mavericks combined men's and women's team finished fourth among visitors.

The St. Petersburg Masters conducted the meet at its regular venue, North Shore Pool.

Meanwhile, in a recent postal meet, the Mavericks' 85-and-over men's relay team set a national record of 6,235 yards. Swimmers were Art Holden, 89, Don McCullough, 85, and Dave Malbrough, 87.

About 1,931 swimmers and 139 clubs from around the world competed. Postal meets require competitors to swim in their own pools, then submit times and distances to the meet organizer. Individual Mavericks placers by age group included Malbrough, third; Paul Hutinger, 76, fourth; Brud Cleaveland, 83, fourth; McCullough, fourth; Holden, fifth; Gertrud Zint, 83, fifth; and Patricia Bond, 63, sixth.
