ST. PETERSBURG -- Lakeview Shopping Center, at 22nd Avenue S and 34th Street, is getting a grocery store to fill the space vacated in March by Sunshine Thrift Store.

Price Buster Food Centers Inc., a subsidiary of Associated Grocers of Florida Inc., signed a lease on the large vacant space.

Vice president Chuck Barry, who is based in Miami, declined to disclose any details Tuesday. He was in the St. Petersburg store Tuesday morning after signing a lease and said he would have more information, including a construction schedule, soon.

Price Buster Food Centers are new and represent a move into retailing by Associated Grocers, a food wholesaler, said an administrative assistant in the Miami office.

"We are a limited-assortment store," said Sandra Mercado. "If you are familiar with Save-A-Lot," that is the type of store.

"Instead of having spaghetti sauce, Ragu or Prego or some other type, our store will only carry one. We cater to low-income, large families."

Mercado said the store will feature brand-name products in special sales. The first Price Buster is scheduled to open soon in Fort Lauderdale, she said.

Price Buster won't be the first grocery in the Lakeview Shopping Center. When construction began on the center in 1960, a Publix was the anchor tenant. Publix moved from the center in 1982 and Sun World supermarkets moved in. When Sun World left in the mid-1980s, Sunshine Thrift Store took the space and stayed 15 years.

The owners of the thrift store said that when their lease expired they wanted to look for a more modern building.
