Capt. David A. Porter, a deceased Army veteran of the Vietnam War and a former St. Petersburg resident, will be honored posthumously by the Order of the Silver Rose in a Memorial Day service May 28 at Sanctuary Gardens, Seminole.

Porter served in Vietnam from September 1968 until September 1969. He died Sept. 12, 1999, from Agent Orange-related sarcoma.

David Miller, president of the Pinellas County Veterans Liaison Council, will present the medal to Porter's widow, Kathleen Porter.

Marine Corps Pfc. Derek K. Dawson, son of Hilda M. Dawson of Valrico and Kevin T. Dawson of St. Petersburg, has completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

He is a 2000 graduate of Bloomingdale High School, Valrico.

Navy Petty Officer 1st Class John R. Bayer, son of Marilyn M. and Donald M. Bayer of St. Petersburg, received a military outstanding volunteer service medal while serving with Naval Air Reserves, Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Oak Harbor, Wash.

The military outstanding volunteer service medal is given in recognition of exceptional voluntary public service.

A 1978 graduate of Seminole High School, Bayer joined the Navy in September 1978.

Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Christopher C. Lovelace, son of Jane and Clair Lovelace of St. Petersburg, recently contributed to amphibious landing exercise Kernel Blitz off the coast of Camp Pendleton, Calif.

The exercise was designed to enhance the training of sailors and Marines in a massive amphibious assault operation. Throughout the 17-day event, Lovelace contributed to the exercise as a hospital corpsman aboard the San Diego-based hospital ship USNS Mercy.
