Prosecutor assumes U.S. attorney's dutiesBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published May 2, 2001 TAMPA -- Federal prosecutor Mac Cauley was sworn in as interim U.S. attorney on Tuesday, replacing Donna Bucella, who announced her resignation in March. A graduate of Bethany College and the University of Pittsburgh, Cauley worked as a homicide prosecutor in Pittsburgh. He began his federal career in 1979 and worked for U.S. attorney offices in Pennsylvania and Virginia. Cauley, 52, has worked in various departments in the Middle District of Florida, based in Tampa, over the past 15 years. He became Bucella's assistant in 1999. Bucella, 44, became U.S. attorney in Florida's Middle District in September 1999, after her predecessor, Charles Wilson, left to take a judgeship on the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The nation's 93 U.S. attorneys serve at the pleasure of the president. Often, only a handful keep their jobs when a new party takes control of the White House. U.S. Reps. C.W. Bill Young and Clay Shaw and Gov. Jeb Bush have created a nominating committee to help select Bucella's permanent replacement. President Bush will make the final selection, which the U.S. Senate must confirm. The process could take several months. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
