ST. PETERSBURG -- Tampa Catholic's Maura Brosnan and St. Petersburg Catholic's Angela Vidal hooked up in a dramatic pitchers' duel in the Class 3A, Region 3 quarterfinal that wasn't decided until the Crusaders scored the only run of the game in the seventh inning.

With the contest scoreless, Ashley Hubbell led off that inning for the Crusaders with a single and Lauren Shepard followed with a bunt single. Leigh Montejo's sacrifice bunt moved both runners up.

Marissa Menendez then hit a grounder to second baseman Lauren Timberlake, who threw home in an attempt to get Hubbell. Hubbell's slide knocked the ball loose from catcher Jennie Ann Feola for the 1-0 lead.

Brosnan ran into trouble in the bottom half of the inning. Feola walked with one out and went to second on a passed ball. Hubbell made an error at second to put runners on first and third, but Brosnan retired the next two batters.

The Barons also threatened in the second, when Feola doubled and went to third on a wild pitch with no outs. But Brosnan struck out the next three batters.

Brosnan finished with 13 strikeouts, allowing two hits. Vidal fanned nine and surrendered five hits.

"They got the run they needed and we didn't," Barons' coach Tom Fabian said. "That's what happens in these 1-0 games. Our kids played well. They've got nothing to be ashamed of." -- RODNEY PAGE
