It's a Really Big Show.
Avant Garde, the Tampa Museum of Art's young professionals group, and the Vitale Bros., from St. Petersburg, are putting on Saturday's show. With the funds raised from the fashion show and other events, Avant Garde purchases a piece of art. That piece, usually by an emerging local artist, is donated to the museum's collection.
This year's fashion show will include interactive video performances and the work of local artists, such as Melanie Allen.
Allen, who just graduated from the Academy of Merchandising and Design in Town 'N Country, describes her clothing line as "clubby and gothy." For the show, Allen will feature liquid latex fabrics. One piece is a netted, thinly woven fabric that is shaped around the body form. Some of what will be displayed at the show can't actually be worn, but much of her art usually can.
Allen's designs, which also come in plus sizes, have been shown at fashion shows at the Castle nightclub in Ybor City and at Ultra, where she sells her clothing.
Along with Allen, 46 other local aspiring designers and artists will be featured.
