Art that is becoming
Yes, that's a deliberate mismatch of two negatives by Victor Serbin, now exhibiting at the Galleries at Salt Creek. Serbin, of Woodstock, N.Y., is a student of postmodernist thought, expressed here by the theory that meaning can take place only when there is a future and a past. Serbin, who alters his images through layering, toners and scratching directly on the negatives, also is a postmodernist photographer in that he re-invents his images through manipulation. His work is concerned more with process than image. Lance Rodgers, who curates Salt Creek's major shows, discovered Serbin at a Gasparilla arts festival and invited him for his first bay area gallery exhibit. Salt Creek is at 1600 Fourth S, St. Petersburg. The show continues through May 19. Hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; closed Sunday and Monday. Free. Call (727) 894-2653.
