Florida long has been known for its trophy-sized largemouth bass, but while some lakes have seen their glory days pass, one body of water in North Pinellas County still produces its share of lunkers.
Ten-pound bass are not an unusual catch for anglers fishing Lake Tarpon. The truth is, many of those fishermen probably are catching the same fish again and again. Only a few guides fish the lake, and those who do encourage their customers to take pictures, not trophies.
More conservative fishing regulations also have played a role. In July 1992, for the first time in 40 years, the laws governing largemouth bass changed. The daily bag limit was reduced from 10 to five. Only one of the five may be over 22 inches long.
Strict regulations combined with more environmentally minded angling have helped improve bass fishing statewide. For information on bass fishing on Lake Tarpon, call Tarpon Tom's at (727) 938-2379.
