Great Blue Heron

This large wading bird, sometimes mistaken for a crane, frequently is seen at the edge of ponds and tidal flats. The fisherman's friend, great blues are a good sign that a body of water is healthy and teeming with life. Watching them wade for food is interesting, but the true treat is when the big birds take to the air.
