Stretching nearly 40 miles across southern Hillsborough County, the Little Manatee River offers a shady respite from the summer heat. Designated an Outstanding Florida Water and part of the Cockroach Bay Aquatic Preserve, the Little Manatee River is an excellent paddle for the novice. The nearby Little Manatee River State Recreation Area, a 2,416-acre park, offers camping, canoeing, picnicking and fishing. Call (813) 671-5005.
