Some people think fly fishing is an elitist sport, but it need not be. Specialty shops like the Saltwater Fly Fisherman in Clearwater take the mystery out of catching fish on the fly.
The shop, located at 623 Cleveland St., sponsors a casting clinic at 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays and a fly-tying clinic at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays. Call (727) 443-5000 for information.
Bill Jackson Shop for Adventure, 9501 U.S. 19 N, Pinellas Park, also sponsors clinics. Call (727) 576-4169 for reservations.
There also are two good clubs in the area. The Suncoast Fly Fishers meet the third Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Wyoming Antelope Club, 3700 126th Ave. N, St. Petersburg. Contact Terry Minke at (727) 898-8989 for membership information, or check out the club's Web site at http://home1.gte.net/cawthon/index.html.
The Tampa Bay Fly Fishing Club meets the second Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. at the North Boulevard Community Center, one block north of Kennedy, in Tampa. Contact Dick Miekka at (727) 866-8682 or Greg Stepanski at (813) 975-1557.
If your store or club sponsors a regular fly casting or tying clinic, let us know. Send your release to Times Outdoors, 490 First Ave. S, St. Petersburg, FL 33701.
