Spanish mackerel often are called an "everyman's fish" because they can be caught almost anywhere, from inshore grass flats to offshore sea buoys, by anglers of all skill levels.
Every spring and fall these "Spannies," as they sometimes are called, travel in big schools up and down the Suncoast. Anglers wanting to grab a piece of the action can check out the twin piers at Fort De Soto Park. The piers, known for their excellent mackerel fishing, are free and open 24 hours a day.
The Gulf Pier (the most western of the two) sells frozen bait at its concession stand. The Bay Pier has a full-service bait shop. Gulf Pier -- (727) 864-9937; Bay Pier -- (727) 864-3345.
