The state's top marine scientists make their home here in Tampa Bay.
The latest information on fish, dolphins, sea turtles, manatees, red tide, coral reefs and other threatened habitat comes from folks at the Florida Marine Research Institute on St. Petersburg's waterfront.
The institute also offers educational programs and literature on a variety of marine-related subjects.
If you see a sick, injured or dead sea turtle or manatee, call the Florida Marine Patrol at (800) DIAL-FMP. The institute also has a special turtle stranding staff. You can contact them by pager at (800) 241-4653 (ID#274-4867). Please be prepared to answer the following questions:
- What is the exact location of the animal?
- Is the turtle alive or dead?
- What is the approximate size of the turtle?
- Is the turtle marked with spray paint? (This indicates that the turtle has been documented.)
- What is the location of the closest access point to the turtle?
For more information on any of the institute's programs, contact Florida Marine Research Institute, 100 Eighth Ave. S.E., St. Petersburg, Florida 33701. Call (727) 896-8626, or go to info@fmri.usf.edu.
