Every Friday at 5:30 p.m. for the past 15 years, Steve Strange and a dedicated band of open-water enthusiasts have been meeting at Clearwater's Pier 60 for a gulf swim.
Strange also hosts the "Strange Man Biathlon," a run/swim/run each summer at the Palm Pavilion on north Clearwater Beach. This year's event is July 29.
Strange's crew isn't the only group that meets to swim. Ron Collins, the first man to swim the length of Tampa Bay, leads a group on Sundays, 8 a.m., at the same place. To learn more about open-water swimming, log on to http://DistanceMatters.com.
