Bulls bitsBy ROD GIPSON © St. Petersburg Times, published May 5, 2000 TAMPA -- The USF softball team wrapped up its home season Sunday with a 4-3 loss to DePaul. The Blue Demons took an early 1-0 lead on a fielding error by Lea Mishlan in the top of third. South Florida answered in the bottom of the fourth when Tracy Hammett singled to centerfield, scoring Alanna Hazzard from second to make it 1-1. Later in that same inning, Nikki Phillips drove in Renee Oursler to give the Bulls a 2-1 lead. DePaul scored two more runs in the top of the sixth to take a 4-2 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Mishlan, in her final at-bat at the USF Softball Complex, belted a solo home run to cut the lead to 4-3. The loss leaves the Bulls 39-28 and 11-4 in Conference USA. The Bulls remain in third place behind Southern Miss and DePaul. The Bulls play a three-game series at Southern Miss on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday will be a doubleheader. The C-USA tournament begins May 11 at the field of the regular-season champion. WOMEN'S GOLF: The Bulls will compete at the NCAA East Regional at the Scarlet Course at Ohio State University May 11-13. Kelly Lagedrost, a junior and a 1999 first team All-American, will have the opportunity to defend her co-medalist honors from the 1999 NCAA East Regional, an honor she shared with Duke's Beth Bauer. In addition to Lagedrost, junior Angie Connell is among the Bulls' leaders, entering the regional tournament with a 76.8 stroke average and three top-10 finishes in her past four tournaments. MEN'S SOCCER: The Bulls announced their 2000 schedule, which is highlighted with several high-profile opponents. They open Sept. 1 at Virginia's Coca Cola Classic, playing the host and a second game that weekend, Sept. 3 against Maryland. It will be the first of three tournament weekends during the regular season, including Sept. 15-17 at Furman and Sept. 29-Oct. 1, when USF hosts the Reebok Soccer Classic. The Bulls open their C-USA schedule in the third game of the season with a Sept. 9 home game against Marquette. That will be the first of eight C-USA games, leading up to the conference tournament Nov. 9-12.
