Zephyrhills star playsBy KEVIN KELLY © St. Petersburg Times, published May 6, 2000 ZEPHYRHILLS -- The question whether Zephyrhills' Brett Cimorelli would play in the Class 4A, Region 2 semifinal against Winter Haven was answered at game time Friday. Cimorelli, who earlier was in an East Pasco Medical Center operating room having three bones in his left cheek repaired, started in rightfield and batted third. He received a rousing ovation before his first at-bat. "It was only a 30-minute surgery," he said. "I didn't know how groggy I was going to be. As soon as I woke up, I felt great." Wearing a modified batting helmet to protect his cheek, Cimorelli went 1-for-3 with a single, RBI and walk in the Bulldogs' 7-5 win. Zephyrhills coach Bruce Cimorelli confirmed the pitcher will start the Bulldogs' region title game against Sebring at home on Tuesday. "I'm proud of him," Bruce said. "He doesn't back down from anything. I think it sparked the kids having Brett out there."
