The Times recently asked readers what priorities they have for spending tax money as the Hernando County Commission prepares to adopt a 2001-02 budget later this summer. Here is a sample of the responses:

* * *

"The county should spend their money more wisely. First, they need to fix the roads. Then give money to the school boards. I'm only 13, but I know what I'm talking about."

Marissa King, Spring Hill

* * *

"I cannot believe it is 2001, and there are still limerock roads in this county. ... Instead of repaving roads in Spring Hill over and over again, how about paying attention to these forgotten residential roads?"

Shari Mulvey, Brooksville

* * *

"Please consider the Dawn Center and its outreach programs. The county should allocate at least $100,000 a year for this desperately needed agency."

Maureen Soliman, Spring Hill

* * *

"More attempt should be made to make the area more sidewalk friendly."

Jill Maden, Spring Hill

* * *

"The county should buy any available land at Pine Island and Bayport areas to make bigger beaches for residents to enjoy."

Bob and Hazel Grover, Spring Hill

* * *

"Our community will die without strong code enforcement. ... You only have to look around and see that we need more code enforcing and need it badly."

William Balaskas, Spring Hill

* * *

"Fully fund the local share of services required of the public in order to achieve and maintain justice/equal opportunity."

Jerry Bosworth, Brooksville

* * *

"Take care of what we have, e.g. our natural resources; stop depletion of natural resources, human and material."

Jan Kalnbach, Brooksville

* * *

"Encourage growth with a sense toward our environment. Beautify our roads and highways with a no-maintenance landscape."

Lana Gates, Weeki Wachee

* * *

"Hernando County needs an elder day care center to provide respite for caregivers."

Robert Wingert, Brooksville

* * *

"Resurfacing of county roads! Our cars are being ruined by the large and many potholes."

Frank and Diane Seymour, Weeki Wachee

* * *

"I would like more scrutiny of any and all planned expenditures of any planned programs."

Robert Michalek, Brooksville

* * *

"One thing I would like to see is the trail at Veterans Park on Spring Hill Drive paved or blacktopped. It is a wonderful trail but dangerous being only mulch."

Marion Unterweger, Spring Hill

* * *

"Improve pay scale for county employees ... to keep and attract quality employees."

Joanne Snell, Spring Hill

* * *

"You need more streetlights on Spring Hill Drive."

Michael Rizzo, Spring Hill

* * *

"It is inconceivable to me and many others why Hernando County does not supply transportation to physically impaired residents of the county."

Joanna Dinatale, Spring Hill

* * *

"Build a swimming pool and facility at Veterans Memorial Park."

Shirley McCray, Spring Hill

* * *

"It is not the county's money; it is my money and your money. Before any allocations are considered, it should be determined just what is government's function."

Sally Sevier, Brooksville

* * *

"Curbs bordering our streets would beautify this city. Until we do it, we will always be Hicksville."

Harold Brown, Spring Hill

* * *

"Fund a program to condemn and raze dilapidated and abandoned structures and old trailers."

Ann DiNardo, Brooksville

* * *

"The commissioners need to look at curbing their spending to hold this year's budget at $184.6-million."

Anna Liisa Covell, Nobleton
