Travel section gets national awardBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published May 6, 2001 The St. Petersburg Times Travel section has again won honors in a national competition. The Times' entry won a bronze award in the Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Competition. The contest, sponsored by the Society of American Travel Writers Foundation, drew 1,084 entries from publications throughout North America. Judging the 23 entries in print and electronic categories was the faculty of the School of Journalism at the University of Florida. In their comments about the Times the judges said: "Great photography, exquisite design and inventive writing all work together to make the St. Petersburg Times Travel section stand out. Useful travel information is presented in an equally useful -- and attractive -- manner. A local travel calendar is an added bonus for readers." The Times was honored in the category for papers with Sunday circulation between 350,000 and 499,999. Winning gold in that category was the Orange County (Calif.) Register; silver went to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The New York Times won the gold for papers with circulation of more than 500,000; the Los Angeles Daily News won gold for the circulation category of 200,000 to 349,999. The best travel magazines were judged to be, in order, Arizona Highways, National Geographic Traveler and Caribbean Travel & Life. The St. Petersburg Times had previously won two gold, one silver and one bronze award since 1995. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
