Woman's arm amputated after bus runs over herBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published May 7, 2000 CLEARWATER -- A 57-year old woman remained in critical condition Friday, a day after her right arm was amputated from injuries she suffered in a freak accident. About 6:15 a.m. Thursday a Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority bus dropped off passengers near the food court at Clearwater Mall, said Clearwater police Sgt. Doug Griffith. Ruth A. Martens tried to catch the bus, pounding against the side of the vehicle. Martens fell and the bus ran over her right side, Griffith said. Martens was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, where her arm was amputated. Police have no available address for Martens. Learn safe boating over four-week coursePALM HARBOR -- Anclote Key Sail and Power Squadron will offer "Boat Smart," a four-week safe boating course on Tuesdays from May 9 to May 30. Sessions are scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Baywood Village clubhouse, 309 Westwinds Drive, Palm Harbor. Learn how to handle a boat, seamanship, how to tie knots, rules of the sea, navigational aids and more. Instruction, by certified members of the U.S. Sail and Power Squadron, is free, but there is a $15 fee for the book, which you keep. To earn a certificate, you must attend all four sessions. Directions from Alt. U.S. 19: Go west on Klosterman Road to Oak Bluff Avenue on the left; go two blocks to Westwinds Drive and turn left to Baywood clubhouse. National Safety Council seeks local nominationsCLEARWATER -- The Suncoast Chapter of the National Safety Council is accepting nominations for communitywide safety awards. The categories include community, traffic, occupational and schools. The purpose of the awards is to showcase the efforts of various agencies, city governments, companies, school groups and private individuals in the area of safety. Applications must be returned to the Suncoast Chapter office, 1145 Court St., Clearwater, FL 33756 by June 30. All awards will be presented at a special breakfast Aug. 29 at the All Children's Hospital Center Auditorium. For applications, call the Suncoast Chapter of the Safety Council at 442-0233, ext. 328.
