GULFPORT -- The Gulfport City Council voted itself a raise Tuesday for the first time in more than a decade.

The raises, which will take effect in October, bring the mayor's salary in Gulfport to $800 a month and the commissioners' salaries to $600 monthly.

Gulfport City Manager Bob Lee suggested the pay increases after seeing a Florida League of Cities study that showed Gulfport fell below the state average for elected officials' salaries.

The new salaries are still slightly less than the statewide average for cities with populations of 10,000 to 49,999.

Commissioners approved the raise 5-0. Even Commissioner Larry Cooper, who had opposed the salary increase at an earlier meeting, voted in favor of it.
