COFFEE CONCERT SERIES: The Florida Orchestra performs at 11 a.m. in the Bayfront Center's Mahaffey Theater, 400 First St. S, St. Petersburg. Program includes Suppe's Light Cavalry Overture, Khachaturian's Sabre Dance, Listz's Battle of the Huns, Vivaldi's Piccolo Concerto, Gluck's Dance of the Furies and Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. $17-26. FESTIVAL BALLET: The Ballet Society presents stars of the London City Ballet at 8 p.m. tonight and Saturday at the Palladium Theater, 253 Fifth Ave. N, St. Petersburg. The collaboration includes a repertory of classical ballet and modern dance. $25 dress circle (includes post-performance reception, today only) or $15; $8 seniors and children 12 and under. SPRING SHOWCASE: The Venue Actors Studio will present two programs featuring acting students at the Sunshine Center, 330 Fifth St. N, St. Petersburg. 2 p.m. show features kids ages 4-13 performing skits and stories. At 6 p.m., students ages 14-17 present a program titled Metamorphosis. $5; $2 seniors and children 12 and under for each show, tickets at the door. Call 893-7101 or 321-6531.

KIDS' DAY AT THE PIER: The fun starts at 8:30 a.m. with the annual Kids Fishing Tournament in the Pier courtyard, 800 Second Ave. NE, St. Petersburg. The first 200 kids (accompanied by an adult) receive bait, a goodie bag and lunch. Prizes awarded between 11 a.m. and noon. The fun continues with the Pokemon finals from 1 to 5 p.m., which include registration, card trading, playing instructions and prizes. The afternoon is filled with kids' activities, clowns, face painting, roving street theater, giveaways and entertainment including the Urban Gypsies Band. Free. Call 821-6164.

MODERN CHAMBER MUSIC: The Tampa Bay Composers forum presents a New Directions concert, 8 p.m. in St. Petersburg Junior College, Humanities Room 117, 6605 Fifth Ave. N. FOREST BONSAI: Pat Bradley demonstrates this planting technique at 11 a.m. in the Oak Pavilion of Sunken Gardens, 1825 Fourth St. N, St. Petersburg. A wide range of natural landscapes can be created with this informal style. Free with park admission. Call 551-3100.
