Child's 2-story fall broken by bushesBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published May 8, 2001 BRANDON -- A 13-month-old child fell from a second-story window in an apartment complex Monday night, but was expected to recover. Neighbors said the child's parents were visiting friends who live in a second-floor unit at Bloomingdale Woods apartments. The child fell through a screen in the living room's picture window, falling 15 to 20 feet before landing in some bushes below the window. Lynne Allen lives on the ground floor of the complex and heard the baby cry and fall past her window. "I thought I was going to have to do CPR when I saw it fall," Allen said. "But he was crying when his parents picked him up. Then he started throwing up, so they decided to go ahead and take him to the hospital." Allen said the screens in her complex's windows are flimsy and not screwed into the frame. Before she screwed hers in, her cats could push them open. The screens on the apartment upstairs were loose in the windows. "Hopefully, this baby's okay," Allen said. "But what's going to happen to the next little one who falls?" Deputies did not release the child's name Monday night. Hillsborough County Fire Rescue officials said the child was taken by helicopter to Tampa General Hospital. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
